Manabu Yamanaka, born 1959 in Japan, is a photographer who focuses mainly on societal outcasts. His work includes images of people with severe physical deformations (Jyoudo), unborn and deformed embryos (WuKongMangMangRan), decaying animal corpses (Fujohkan), and in the series shown here, the elderly nude (Gyahtei).
In Gyahtei the unforgiving passage of time on our human frames is brutally evident, and provides a visual record of becoming old that most societies otherwise suppress.
